What about money?

 You may have been told that you would have no money if you tried to leave your abusive partner. Or you may just be wondering what you would be entitled to for yourself and your children, if you have any.

If you have no income, you are entitled to claim Income Support from the Benefits Agency. The amount you will get each week depends on your circumstances. Contact the Benefits Agency or your local Citizen's Advice Bureau (get their number from the phone book) for more details.

If you are on Income Support, your rent for wherever you stay will be paid through Housing Benefit, your children will get free school meals, you won't have to pay prescription charges and you will get free Legal Aid.

You can also apply for help with furnishing a new home.

So although Income Support only provides you with a small income, it acts as a passport to other benefits. And it is paid directly to you, so you know exactly how much money you will get every week.
